What Is Divine Mercy Sunday—and Why Do We Pray the Chaplet?
Each year, on the Sunday after Easter we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday—a beautiful day when the Church invites us to rest in the goodness and mercy of God.
This special feast was established by Pope St. John Paul II in the year 2000, inspired by the writings of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, a humble Polish nun from the 1930s. St. Faustina was chosen by Jesus to be a messenger of His mercy. Through her personal writings—especially her diary—we learn about the incredible love God has for us, no matter our past or present.
One of the most treasured devotions that came from her revelations is the Divine Mercy Chaplet. A simple yet powerful prayer prayed using rosary beads, the Divine Mercy Chaplet offers the Passion of Christ to the Father while asking for mercy—for ourselves, for others, and for the whole world.
At the heart of this devotion is trust: “Jesus, I trust in You.” Whether we’re carrying grief, fear, joy, or hope, we can bring it all to Him in prayer.
At St. Peter’s, we’re meeting at 2 PM on Divine Mercy Sunday to pray the Chaplet as a parish family. Everyone is welcome, whether you’ve prayed it many times or are just hearing about it for the first time.
We’d love to have you join us as we lean into the mercy of God—together.
